Pulp Fiction is an American neo-noir crime film directed by Quentin Tarantino. It was released on October 14, 1994, and has become one of the most influential films of recent years. The film tells the intertwining stories of two mob hitmen, a boxer named Vincent Vega and his partner Jules Winnfield who are forced to team up with a female ‎sociologist named Mia Wallace. After they are betrayed by their boss Marsellus Wallace, they go on an odyssey to seek revenge against those who wronged them. The story goes back and forth in time. The film is divided into six stories, or chapters, all of which feature very different characters. The first chapter is told over the course of one night in the home of Marsellus Wallace and his wife Mia. The second chapter takes place at a country club where Vincent Vega dances with two beautiful women (played by Bridget Fonda and China Lee) until their ex-girlfriend Mia arrives looking for revenge on Vincent. The third chapter takes place at Vincent's apartment where he fights an unnamed boxer who has come to take his money; this scene reveals that Vincent is a boxer named "Vinny Gorgeous" (not to be confused with Johnny Bratton who played Vinny). The fourth chapter takes place at a restaurant where Vincent and Jules meet a strange gangster named "Butch" (played by Wallace Beery, Jr.). The fifth chapter introduces Vincent and Jules to their boss Marsellus Wallace, who tells them they have 24 hours to get $100,000 from Butch. To do so they must drive Mia to Los Angeles and they must shoot an associate of Butch named Fabienne (played by Jennifer Jason Leigh). The sixth and final chapter is set at a diner after the couple shoots Fabienne. Mia tells them that she is going back to America with some friends because the police are after her for stealing from Wallace's country club. As she leaves, Vincent and Jules' car is forced off the road by two police officers, who shoot them as they flee. In the original script, Mia Wallace had been a childhood friend of Vincent Vega from Omaha . In revisions to the screenplay, she was rewritten as a sociology graduate student , only meeting Vince in his acting class in Los Angeles. She is named after Beatrice Wallace , an actress in "Fear and Desire" (1953), directed by Joseph Losey . Mia's character also appears in "Kill Bill Vol. 1". Tarantino said that it was because he had watched Lee van Cleef in several films that he decided to cast him as Marsellus. He also interviewed Benny "The Jet" Urquidez who played Butch, for the role of Jules. Quentin Tarantino decided Elliot Carver was the best actor for the role of "Butch" after seeing his performance in "Reservoir Dogs". Tarantino said he wanted to cast himself as Vega but did not have enough experience at that point to play the part. Pulp Fiction has generated a great deal of critical praise, with particular praise directed to its screenplay, direction, characters and ensemble cast.
